Waste Management for Shopping Centers

The US Environmental Protection Agency has teamed up with the International Council of Shopping Centers to create a guide for best practices in waste management for shopping centers.

Here's what they came up with:

  • Get management support, identify incentives/disincentives, determine legal requirements;

  • Name a recycling co-ordinator;

  • Form a Green Team;

  • Evaluate center's waste stream;

  • Identify materials to be collected;

  • Choose a recycling service provider;

  • Decide on collection program logistics;

  • Implement the waste management/recycling program;

  • Reap the public relations benefits;

  • Monitor, evaluate, and refine the program.
  • For more information, visit the EPA's America's Marketplace Recycles program.
